So…Netflix announced today that they, starting September 1st (just in time for my birthday, of course), will separate their DVD-by-Mail and Instant Watch streaming service into two separate paid subscriptions.  Currently, I have a good deal at $9.99/month that gives me unlimited DVD-by-Mail per month (limit: 1 at a time) and unlimited Watch Instantly streaming (which I watch via my Apple TV 2).  I have the privilege of continuing my same exact features for $7.99 each, or $15.98 total (for those who struggle with math).

Should I complain?  I think so.  For the mostly inconsequential $6/month difference?  Nope.  But let’s think relatively here – that’s a 60% increase.  For the SAME EXACT service!  What other company could get away with that without causing some sort of a ruckus?

That would be like Apple charging $399 for AppleCare on a 13″ laptop.

That would be like the gas companies charging $5.92/gallon (oops…did I speak too soon?).

That would be like the McDouble from McDonalds’ Dollar Menu skyrocketing to $1.60!!!  The Insanity!

Am I being cheap here?  Perhaps, but I guess I expect more out of a company that I’ve been loyal to since January of 2005 (more than 6 years, for those who struggle with math).  No option for being “grandfathered” in?  No free month of service?  No bigger library for Watch Instantly titles?

What do you think?

I agree with you… we’ve been loyal customers for 7 years, but I am disgusted with these new changes to Netflix… You should have seen the uproar on their FB page… Hoping they at least make the streaming options better. *sigh*

This is the first I have heard of this. We don’t have cable, so rely on netfix for almost all of our tv viewing..and have for several years. I will have to cancel the dvd option, because it simply won’t be worth it for us…I don’t send my dvd’s back very quickly. It honestly makes me want to quit them altogether, but then what would we do with our evenings…play games? hmmm….that doesn’t sound too bad.
